Yagura
(Fortress)

Yagura is one of the most interesting foramtion in the shogi .
I love this formation , and many professional shogi players love
Yagura too . Yagrua is developed as several generation .
First I show the changes of fashion .

Chapter 1. Yagura evolution

Section 1. Oyama's Yagura

At first I show a Yagura of Oayama's young days.
There are some features in Oayama's Yagura .
First , both Black & White move Static Rook's Pawn in early stage .
Second , both move 5th file Pawn afterward , or sometimes move
4th (6th as White ) file Pawn instead of 5th file Pawn .

Section 2 . Yagura nijuyonte-gumi
( Yagura 12 moves formation )

This style is used long time before Hisya-saki-futsuki Yagura appears .
There is many fmous Yagura players in this age ,
Makoto Nakahara , Kunio Yonenaga , Hifumi Katou , Michio Ariyoshi ,
Tatsuya Futakami , etc .

Section 3. Hisha-saki-futsuki Yagura
( Yagura without P-2f )
Teruichi Aono 9dan & Torahiko Tanaka 9dan began to use Hisha-
saki-futsuki Yagura in their young days . And now almost all
(although Hifumi Katou is an exception) Yagura Players
use Hisha-saki-futsuki Yagura .

The moves showed above is relatively old today . Some variations
which White attacks center is very effective against Black's Yagura
foramtion with 3.S77 . Then many Yagura players selects another
moves for using Yagura .

Standard Hisha-saki-futsuki Yagura
(with 3. S-7g)

If Black wants to play Yagura , the game usually started with the moves
1. P-7f P-8d 2. S-6h (diagram 3-2-1). Yagura is relatively difficult to avoid for
White . If White wants to avoid Yagura , he(or she) should move 1. . . P-3d and
transposition to Yokofutori , Gote Furibisha or other openings . After 2. S-6h
White can still avoid Yagura , but the opening of White is limited , for example
Youdou-Furibisha , Sokkou-bougin , Migi-shiken-bisha , Kyuusen-Yagura .

After diagram 3-2-1 , White usually moves 2. . . P-3d , because 2. . . P-8e is
too early to limit his (or her ) own shape if he (or she ) dose't play quick attack .
